The latest
workforce report from the American Geological Institute demonstrates a 'growing imbalance in the age of geoscientists in the profession" with the majority of geoscientists within 15 years of retirement age, and an aging federal workforce. The has also been an increase at both ends of the faculty pipeline with "a concurrent decrease in the number of full professors."
Within the geosciences, 78% of Mining Engineers in federal government are over 50 years old, the highest percentage of any of the fields. It wouldn't surprise me to see a similar demographic in industry.
