Ives Exploration of the Grand Canyon 11 Years Before John Wesley Powell

A presentation on "The Ives Exploration of the Grand Canyon Eleven Years Before John Wesley Powell" will be given by Jerry Snow, Historian at Riordan Mansion State Park in Flagstaff on Sat, Jan. 15.

In 1857-58 the War Department commissioned Lieutenant Joseph Christmas Ives to ascertain the navigability of the Colorado River. One of the products of this expedition was a beautiful map of the Grand Canyon. We will follow this exploration with illustrations from the expedition report.

Presentations are held at 7 pm. [taken from the State Parks announcement]

Here's a link to Ives attractive map, which also was groundbreaking due to the way it used shaded relief. Note the northern extension of the Colorado River into Utah (or not!).
