Geologists are
gathering in Flagstaff a decade after a seminal conference at Grand Canyon to share what we have learned since then about "Cenozoic evolution of the Colorado Plateau- Rocky Mountain landscape, including the upper and lower Colorado River system, uplift of the plateau, and carving of Grand Canyon."
AZGS geologists Jon Spencer, Phil Pearthree, and Charles Ferguson are all making presentations but mostly participating in the informal discussions. Given how much study has been of the area, it can be surprising to hear how many topics are still in debate.
The organizers plan to prepare a summary paper of the "last 10 years of progress and continued challenges to be submitted as the “Introduction” to a
Geosphere theme issue, and 2) Individual research papers from the community to be solicited for the
Geosphere issue for 12 months after the workshop."
