We're sorry to report that William Breed, long time geology curator at the Museum of Northern Arizona, and prominent researcher, died in Flagstaff on January 22. Bill Parker, paleontologist at Petrified Forest National Park, noted in his Chinleana blog that Breed had a "long
and accomplished career predominantly studying the geology and
paleontology of the southwestern U.S. He is also well known for his
work with Edwin (Ned) Colbert and Jim Jensen in Antarctica in 1969 when

Bill was an enthusiastic and curious geologist. That might sound rote but Bill took his passion for earth science to rare levels. His love of the Grand Canyon and everything "Colorado Plateau" was limitless. He gave me my start in geology by inviting me on my first rafting trip in the Grand Canyon and then giving me my first geology job as a work study student at NAU/MNA. Bill, I hope your eyes are feasting on a stratigraphic paradise somewhere in this vast universe!
