Gordon Gastil, 1928-2012

Gordon Gastil, retired professor of geology at San Diego State, passed away on September 29.    Gordon mapped extensively in Arizona, California, and Mexico, including mapping all of Baja California.  My first graduate field mapping was done with Gordon in Sonora, to match the geology across the Gulf of California.   All of his students and colleagues have wonderful, often humorous stories of working with Gordon.

His obituary is published in the San Diego Union Tribune

and there is a SDSU Memoriam written by Dave Kimbrough and Eric Frost

    Thanks for the news, Lee.
Gastil was my field geology prof as well (1977), and he was immensely talented.
