Geology in the headlines in 2010

Some of the biggest events of the year had geology themes:

Gulf Oil spill
Haiti earthquake kills
Chilean miners rescue
Iceland volcano shuts down air traffic [right, satellite view of eruption plume reaching to Europe. Credit NASA]
Climate science becomes hot button political issue
China's control of rare earth minerals
Floods devastate Pakistan

A few of the geo-topics that got our attention even if they didn't make the evening news were:

Water on Mars and the potential for an early wet and warm environment that could have supported life
Ongoing discovery of a plethora of extra solar planets
Unraveling the full Neanderthal genome

I'm sure there are many others that I'm forgetting. I plan on listing the Arizona geo-themes for 2010 in a separate post.
