A pair of large earthquakes hit the northern Gulf of California at mid-day sending shock waves felt in a few locations across Arizona and into southern Utah. A magnitude 6.2 event was followed by a larger magnitude 6.9 quake just minutes later. The main quake epicenter was about 360 miles south of Phoenix. [Right, epicenter marked by star. Colored areas are reports of where the quake was felt. Credit, USGS]
