The Mining Foundation of the Southwest inducted former CEO of Phelps-Dodge and then Freeport McMoRan Copper & Gold CEO Tim Snider [left], into the American Mining Hall of Fame this Saturday at their annual banquet in Tucson.
They also recognized two honorees from mining history, R.A.F. Penrose [center] and Samuel Peter Heintzelman [right]. Penrose, you may recognize from the Penrose Medal and endowed publication series at GSA and medal for SEG. He made his fortune starting in the 1890s from the Commonwealth Mine in Pearce, Arizona and later formed the Utah Copper Co.
Heintzelman also has Arizona connections, helping set up Sonora Exploring & Mining Co. which developed the Santa Rita and Cerro Colorado mines in the Santa Cruz valley.
