Freeport to hire 400 at Morenci, reopen Miami

Freeport McMoRan Copper & Gold will hire 400 workers for its Morenci copper mine in eastern Arizona [right, my photo May 2008] according to a report in the Arizona Daily Star. In addition, the company will reopen the Miami mine in 2011, and will need 250 construction workers for its sulfur plant at the Safford mine.

Freeport spokesman Richard Peterson spoke about the $150 million sulfur plant that will begin construction at the Dos Pobres Copper mine at Safford, saying, “The plant will burn elemental sulphur that will be brought by railcar to a transfer facility that will be built southeast of Fort Thomas. Sulphur will be transferred from the railcars to trucks for transportation to the sulphur burning plant." [reported on the Commodity Surge blog]
